Bruny Island has a rich history that dates back around 40,000 years, beginning with the indigenous Nueonne people, who are part of the oldest living culture in the world. The island was first sighted by European explorer Abel Tasman in November 1642. European settlement began in 1856, and significant events include the establishment of a maritime quarantine station in 1884 and the internment of German nationals during World War I. Today, Bruny Island is recognized for its cultural significance to the Nuenonne people and its diverse history of settlement by people from various parts of the world since the early 1800s. Archaeological evidence, such as Aboriginal shell middens, further highlights the long-standing human presence on the island.
