The Derwent River Big SwimTM challenges experienced swimmers to cross 34 kilometres of fresh and salt water. It begins in the calm Derwent Valley and ends in the open estuary below the Tasman Bridge. Every swimmer faces changing currents, temperature shifts, and the pride of reaching Hobart by water.
The Derwent River Big SwimTM is officially recognised by the Australian Long Distance Swimming Federation. It stands beside the Rottnest Channel and Palm Beach–Shelly Beach swims as one of the nation’s great tests.
The course passes beneath all four of Hobart’s bridges, tracing the island’s most important river from its quiet inland origins to the sea. It is a challenge shaped by nature, weather, and determination.
